Well done to everyone who took part. If we've we've missed you out, please click here and let us know how you got on.

All Westcroft competitors earn points towards their Olympian Medal Score But only if you tell us..!

The following report and results information has been sent in by Westcroft's very own imbedded reporter Paul Cummings:

Remember this teaser from Paul a few weeks ago:
"So far we have 12 people entered for the A Band Nationals (10-11 years). This makes Westcroft by far the most represented club (no other club has more than 6 entries and that includes Samurai, the organising club). There is still some time to go for more entries, but it does show a good turn out by Westcroft Judo Club. My guess is we will take six medals from it looking at the names entered. That'll put some pressure on!"

Given I'd predicted Joey to take a medal, I think I can claim success in my prediction of six medals as we won five and who knows if Joey would have completed the set if he had competed. Those of us that hadn't heard the news were all very saddened to hear Joey broke his arm last week. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Well done, good prediction Paul, or should we call you "Mystic Meg" now..!

OK now for our results..!

Westcroft were the most successful club in the country in taking three Golds. No other club
took three. In fact, only one other club took two Golds. Other Surrey club results: Croydon took one bronze, Pyrford took one silver and one bronze (same group), Yoshin-Ryu took one bronze.

Didn't he do well..! (10th World Masters - Brussels, Belgium)
6 Day Tournament.

10th World Masters - Brussels, Belgium

Mike represented New Zealand at the 10th World Masters and fought in the U81kg category of the 35-39 age group. This was the bluechip category of this age band (including talented Lode Laats, brother of Olympic Champion Johan Laats - reknowned for the "Laats" take down). Mike fought extremely well - winning two fights out of four, placing 17= out of 54.  He was particularly pleased to beat the current British No.3 in his group, having beaten the British No.4 earlier this year.  Mike fought against Belgian, British and Brazilian competitors.

We quickly mastered the Brussel's transport system and also made time to see Mini Europe, la Bourse, Grand'Place and Mannekin Pis.   The tournament was the biggest ever with over 1700 entries over the 6 days of the tournament.  I caught up with Roland who is one of the organisers of the Marcinelle Bois du Casier tournament we attend annually.

Matty, Amber and Francesca had the privilege of meeting an honorary "Grand Master" of the World Masters events.  Ferd Tihita (6th dan), of Watsonville, California, is aged 80 years old and still competes!  He has entered each of the World Masters championships for the last 10 years (started when he was 70) and won gold at most of these events in his age and weight group.  After his fights are over, he still has the energy to help out the younger ones with his refereeing skills! WHAT AN INSPIRATION - living the "JUDO FOR LIFE" philosophy. The tournament is held annually and 2009 it is in Budapest, Hungary.

Throw of the day has to be Charlie Clark's Tomoe Nage for ippon; - Charlie was a wazari and several yukos down and with just 8 seconds to go when he produced his only score of the bout to win it!  A really great throw, especially in the circumstances.

High Wycombe Masters tournament
17th May 2008

On 17 May Mike Sexton attended the High Wycombe Masters tournament. Mike won bronze in the U81kg 35-39 Age Group and a bronze in the U81kg open age group (35+) against a strong field from the British Masters squad. In addition Mike secured a further 30 points towards his 4th dan, and now has 65 points out of the necessary 100. Mike had nine fights on the day, winning six fights (5 ippons :left uchi mata, right sasae, right ko uchi makikomi, waki gatami, right yoko otoshi, and 1 yuko : sumi gaeshi), drew one, and lost by koka in the other two. On the back of this performance, Mike will be competing for New Zealand at the World Masters Tournament in Brussels on 24-29 June 2008.

Westcroft Judo Club returned to the International "Grand Prix du Casier" Tournament of Marcinelle, Belgium

The club took 28 players plus parents, to the tournament which took place on 24 May 2008. Clubs from Belgium, France, Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain were in attendance. Coaches Michael Sexton, Rachelle Sexton, were delighted with the performance of all the players. The tournament is held in memory of the mining disaster at Marcinelle in 1956.

As we only numbered 28 competitors instead of the 75 that competed last year, we all knew we wouldn't win the Marcinelle Club Cup. As the day drew to a close, Mike had a word with the match official to see if we could leave promptly as soon as we had finished our last contest. As we started to load the coach, Mike came back to tell us that the official had told him  "this would not be possible and we must stay until the end." when we asked why..! A big grin came over Mike's face as he explained that we had once again won the Marcinelle Club Cup. So here are the results of our fantastic Westcroft Judo Club competitors..!

Venimus, Vidimus, Vicimus - We came, we saw, we conquered.
