Peter Vincent
(UK)
Gold
Four good wins on the way to Gold for Peter at the Garami
Heerle competition in Holland. Our hosts in Holland made us very welcome and
the standard of judo was excellent as always.
Peter Vincent became UK School Games 2011 Champion
keeping up the great Westcroft tradition of Gold medals in this event. Peter
won a tightly contested over 81KG group consisting of 2 Scots 2 English and
a Welsh player. Peter scored an ippon win over England Under 100kg player
Stuart Gallimore and then followed this up with a close but controlled yuko
win over eventual silver medalist, Dominic Laing. A surprise win by scot
Matthew Allison coming back from a wazari down meant that Peter had to step
up his game in the last fight against Ben Uphill which he won by a wazari to
take the title.

National
Teams 10th July 2011
Peter Vincent represented the Southern Area in the over 81Kg category in the
under 20 team. The team picked up a well deserved Bronze medal. Peter fought out
of his weight and put up a great fight against both the GB number 1 and 2 under
100kg Players Philip Awiti and Harry Godwin. Peter won his fight against the NHC
by Fusen gachi which gave the team victory 3 - 2 in the quarter final after the
team beat the western area 5 - 1 in the group stage. In the semi final the team
bowed out to a strong London side. With 3 of the Southern Areas team fighting in
the weight above the odds were always stacked against them but there were some
outstanding performances from all the team.
UK
School Games September 2011
Peter has been selected to represent England in this prestigious multi sport
event in the over 81kg category. Two players are selected from the England Squad
per weight with the competition running from the 1st to the 4th September. The
event is a multi sports event and is sponsored by Sainsburys and has an opening
and closing ceremony for all competitors and the idea is to simulate the
Olympics on a smaller scale with Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland
competing. Westcroft have had two players (Kerry Ford and Jack Kelly) represent
England and win Gold in recent years.

'Westcroft Judo Club players won in total five medals –
two Gold, one Silver and two Bronze - at the Kent International
Championships. This is a large, top-level competition, and it is regularly
attended by players from Belgium, the Netherlands, France and other European
countries.
Gold medals were won by Jamal Petgrave and Tim-Philipp Ebel. Both Westcroft
Judoka dominated their categories with convincing wins throughout.
Jamal entered the Blue & Brown Belt boys under 73Kg weight category, and won
three of his four fights by Ippon, and the final by Yuko. He won this
competition with one year to spare on the maximum age, so he will be able to
compete next year again in the same age category, which makes this
achievement even more remarkable.
Tim-Philipp entered the Blue & Brown Belt boys under 60Kg weight category
and had four contests, winning three by Ippon. The final was decided in
style by Ippon with a beautiful Te Guruma, scored within 30 seconds of
'Hajime'. A series of pictures, taken from the video recording can be seen
on the website.
Lauren Hawkins lost her first fight against a huge Dutch girl that must have
been one-and-a-half times her size. Lauren did well to pick herself up, and
winning her second contest. Again she went on the tatami to face a much
heavier girl, but she was able to use her better fitness and agility to win
by Ippon to take the Silver medal.
Ayben Mertdag competed well to take the Bronze in the Blue & Brown Belt
girls under 57Kg.
Emma Jeffries entered the Orange & Green Belt girls in the over 70Kg weight
category and did well to win the second Bronze for Westcroft.
Joey Fowler showed his prowess to come 5th in the largest field of the Blue
& Brown Belt boys, the under 55 Kg weight category, just losing out on a
medal. However, as for Jamal, he is looking forward to compete in the same
age group in this competition once again next year.
Sean Martell took part in the Blue & Brown belt boys competition, weighing
in under 60Kg. He showed good Judo and came seventh in this large and highly
competitive field. Further Westcroft JC competitors were Jack Beckwith,
Stuart Ford and Cavan Gornell. Stuart and Cavan both went out with injuries
and we all hope they will get better soon.
This was a fantastic result for the club and shows the hard work that has
been put into the preparation for the Kent International Championships over
the last months.'

Emily Mathews and Janina
Ebel were representing Westcroft JC at this competition.
Emily won both of her two contests in dominant style by Ippon. She took the
Gold medal, her first at an open competition. Congratulations!
Janina had three contests, all against girls a year older than her. She lost
the first contest, but came back winning the next two contests in style
throwing her opponents with Ippon, winning Silver.
Well done, girls, and hopefully this stimulates more lively attendance by
Westcroft competitors at the next Red Belt Rumble.
This, however, was Emily's and Janina's last Red Belt Rumble, and they are
on now to conquer the Judo world of the higher grades!

Three competitors from
Westcroft JC took part in this well-attended Red Belt Rumble.
Roxy Proctor, still in her first year of competing at open competitions,
weighed in at -28Kg and did very well against more experienced and older
competitors. She had four contests of which she won two and lost two. No
medal this time, but seeing how well she performs at this stage already, it
is clear that the medals will come very soon.
Emily Mathews started in the -26 Kg weight category. She had two contests
and showed her usual fiery and committed style. She won one fight and lost
the other, taking the Silver medal.
Janina Ebel competed in the -30Kg category and had a very good day. She won
her pool with three straight wins, and then won the semi-final as well as
the final taking the Gold. In total five fights, three of which won in style
by Ippon. This was also her first Gold medal at an 'Open' competition - well
done, Janina!
Overall, well done girls, holding the Westcroft flag high at a very
competitive tournament.

Westcroft
had two members who competed for Surrey Boys. Alex Cummings fought at U66kg
and Joey Fowler at U60kg.
First up were Kent, who were favoured with lots of England squad members
but Surrey fought well and beat them 6-5.
Next
came a comfortable win over Sussex, 7-3.
Finally, the title decider against the hosts, Hampshire, who were also
unbeaten and heavily laden with GBRs on backs and England roses on
chests. It was so incredibly tight that it all came down to the last
fight, which Surrey lost.
So
the result went 6-5 to Hampshire and Surrey had to settle for silver.
And a very nice looking silver medal it is too.
The
Surrey girls came 3rd,
The
women 4th
The
men 2nd (also losing by a single fight, though in their case it was
their first round loss that cost them).

Westcroft Judo Club attended the Micklefield Red Belt Rumble at the High Wycombe Judo Centre with a delegation of four competitors.
Janina Ebel took part in the girls U12, under 32kg, in a field of five competitors were she was the visibly the slightest and youngest. Fought bravely in her typical attacking style and won three fights (two of which by Ippon) and lost one, to win Silver.
Emily Mathews
took part in the girls under 28kg, U12. A solid performance in her usual continuously attacking style winning two fights out of three (both of which with Ippon), getting her a well-deserved Bronze.
Jonny Proctor took part in the boys U12, under 34kg in a large field winning three fights and loosing one, winning the Bronze medal fight, scoring Ippon within 10 seconds with a beautiful O-Soto-Gari.
Roxanne ‘Roxy’ Proctor took part in
the same girls under 28kg category as Emily, U12. On only her second open competition, Roxy showed great spirit and proceeded to the Bronze medal fight. Attacked all the time, whilst her opponent did not attack once over the whole duration of the fight. Very unfortunate to loose with a disputable Yuko.
Tim-Philipp Ebel supported the competitors with excellent mat-side coaching, which was appreciated by all and the results are speaking for themselves.
All in all an excellent performance of the Westcroft JC team, with all competitors showing great Judo skill and attacking styles. Well done to Roxy, Emily, Janina and Jonny, and a thank you to Tim-Philipp.’

GLL Sport Foundation – Athlete Support Opportunities
Re: GLL Sport Foundation – Athlete Support Opportunities
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that GLL Sport
Foundation athlete support for 2011 is now open for applications.
The Foundation has been established specifically to help young people
develop their sporting potential and aims to reduce the financial burden
of training and competition costs on talented young athletes, many of
whom aspire to participate in the 2012 London Olympics, Paralympics and
beyond into 2016..
We were delighted that in 2010 more than 850 athletes, across 50
different Olympic, Paralympic, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sports
received financial grants and GLL training memberships totaling over
Ł400,000 from the Foundation. 43% of applicants receive financial
support; furthermore 56% of award recipients were under the age of 16.
This made the Foundation one of the largest independent supporters of
young athletes in London and the South East.
In 2011 we will continue to work in partnership with SportsAid to
receive nominations from National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and to help us
validate applications received and ensure support ties in with NGB
Pathways for talent identification and development.
Our experience suggests that many young athletes last year successfully
applied for support after seeing details from coaches
/ clubs and we hope this will be the case again in 2011. Our
target for 2011 is to reach as many as 1000 athletes with financial and
training support.
Information on how to apply is available on the GLL Sport Foundation
website www.gllsportfoundation.org.
To enable the Foundation to be successful in reaching athlete within its
Partnership Boroughs. The deadline for applications is 13 February
2011.
