The
national event to acknowledge, appreciate and reward volunteers and

The British Judo Association
People Awards is designed to formally recognise the considerable efforts
provided by volunteers in our sport, whose hard work, commitment and dedication
continues to support the development of judo across the UK.
The
British Judo Association Volunteer Recognition Programme is a meaningful way to
provide formal recognition for outstanding performance and contributions by a
club volunteer who has played an instrumental role in supporting British Judo’s
development. Individuals volunteer for many
reasons; personal growth,
personal achievement, to create social bonds and strengthen their community. If
you know of someone whose efforts are worthy of recognition, we encourage you to
make a nomination. |

Mat-side Matters
from our intrepid reporter Paul Cummings
At the Intercounties on Sunday, Surrey took the silver in the Men's and Girl's
sections with bronzes in the Boy's and Women's sections.
Ben Cummings was the only Westcroft person competing for Surrey, in the Over
73kgs Boys. Peter Vincent represented Sussex at O73 boys too.
In the first round, Surrey were drawing 5-5 with Kent with just the O73s
to go. Ben had to fight the English number 1 ranked U90kg fighter. Despite the
weight difference, the fight was very close with plenty of action, though
neither boy looked like getting a decisive score. Eventually Ben was dragged to
the floor and the extra weight told as he was held down for Ippon, despite
fighting vigorously to the last second to get out. In the
second round, Surrey were again drawing 5-5 with eventual champions
Hampshire. Ben again had a big fighter to decide the match, but this time a
beautiful Tani Otoshi counter won the fight with a very satisfying thud as his
opponent hit the mat. Final round and Surrey were
already beaten 6-4 by the time Ben came to fight. It didn't matter as their
opponents were Sussex and a chance for Ben to fight Peter Vincent. Best I don't
say too much about this one as the result was what was expected by most people
even though Peter appeared to be below his best. Note:
Pete Vincent has
been selected by England for the Top EJU Ranking competition in Poland in May
and also for the training camp in Romania in October.
Also, Westcroft member John Hisee and Peter Vincent have both been selected to
represent the BJC National Team in Belgium at the Ippon Trophy. |

Mat-side Matters
from our intrepid reporter Paul Cummings
A very successful weekend for Westcroft at the Surrey Trials.
Seniors:
Nicky Fowler U66 Silver - W1, L2 (but one of the losses was to the U60 winner,
so it didn't count against him) Unlucky to lose to the U60 winner as Nicky had a
hold down that was called off after 24 secs when most people in the hall
(including me) thought the hold was still on. That took the last of Nicky's
strength and it was just a matter of time after that before he was pulled down
and held down himself.
Juniors:
Joey Fowler U50 Silver - cracking form to start with his first two fights
lasting a total of 5 seconds lost to a brown belt.
Tim-Philip Ebel U55 Silver - W3 L1 - good form and a certain final from the
beginning, until losing to a brown belt.
Alex Cummings U60 5th - moved up a weight on the day and was off form (he has
beaten the silver and both bronze winners virtually every time they have fought)
Jack Beckworth U73 Silver - W0 L1 - very much off form, but should have won
until he made a mistake and was held down.
Ben Cummings O73 Gold - W3 L0 - A lineup 15th Mons, all heavier (up to 17kg) and
all ipponed quickly. Opened with a great ouchi gake after 30 secs against a guy
weighing 92 kg (Ben weighed in at 75). He's now looking forward to the
Intercounties next month, Ben also completed his timekeeper qualification by
officiating at 4 competitions post training course.
All Westcroft entrants made the Surrey Squad (Alex was invited to continue in it
after winning 2 silvers in the last two Surrey trials).
Thanks to Charlie Clark, who helped out with Coaching the boys during their
fights.
Well done Paul, and thanks for the report..! |

Peter
Vincent added his BJA Dan Grade to his BJC Dan Grade following the National
Grading at High Wycombe on Saturday 10th April 2010. This is a great achievement
holding two Dan grades at 15 years of age.
Peter passed his Dan Grade in a line up beating the final opponent in the last
15 seconds with a yoko tomonoeage ippon throw. Peter won his fights with three
ippon throws, one hold down and an armlock.

New half a million pound home of Westcroft Judo Club
|
|
| |
|
On Saturday 6th February, Westcroft Judo Club officially unveiled its new
£500,000 judo club based at Carshalton Boys Sport College.
 The
new facility, which is an extension to the schools existing indoor sports
facility, boasts a 10m x 12m contest area on a sprung floor and a minor
spectator area. It was made possible by funding through the Community Club
Development Programme (CCDP), which is an innovative collaboration between the
Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England and 16 National Governing
Bodies.
The programme aims to bring with it flexibility to encourage creative approaches
to enhancing club facilities and increasing participation by members of
the local community -particularly those who are traditionally underrepresented in
sports participation.

GB Cadet trials at Kendal

|
| |
13th March
|
|
Peter Vincent
|

Bronze |
|
|
|
|
|
Pete came third in the GB
Cadet trials at Kendal
Peter was selected to represent England as current England number 2 cadet at
under 73kg. The Home countries select their best players and they fight off in a
pool to pool competition to achieve a GB ranking with the number one going to
the European Cadet Championships.
Pete has beaten the GB No.1 twice before recently but lost out to him this time.
Great for the club to have players performing at the very top of Cadet Judo.
Andy coached Peter and was excellent.
Peter has been selected to represent England at Lugi, Sweden and also Venray,
Holland in May. (Although these are self funded) and will also be going to Italy
in August for a training camp with the England Squad.
Well done Peter, another great
result..!
UPDATE 18th March:
After his convincing performance at Kendal, Peter Vincent has
just been selected to represent England at a top Cadet ranking event in Czech
Republic. Well done Peter...
