Welcome to the dynamic sport of Judo..

From the Japanese meaning the “gentle way”, Judo is a very disciplined form of martial art, which is an ideal activity for all youngsters from the age of four upwards.

Judo is a modern Olympic combat sport and an ideal form of self-defence. Participants are taught correct falling procedures, throwing, breaking balance and grappling techniques; all in a controlled environment. Punching and kicking are prohibited in Judo.

The benefits of regular participation range from improved self-esteem and confidence to gains in stamina, strength, fitness and co-ordination. Discipline and respect also play a large part in the sport and those who participate are encouraged and expected to exercise this at all times.

Bronze Level Clubmark by SportEngland

Westcroft Judo Club has been awarded the bronze level club mark by SportEngland. The club has set up a number of policies to ensure that all coaches have up-to-the minute qualifications and training, and that club players have a safe environment when practicing judo.

Club coaches Andy Ede, Kathie Clark, Rachelle and Mike Sexton are all fully qualified level 2 coaches, and in addition have received training in child protection, diversity and equality and good practice in running a sports club. All coaches have up-to-date first aid certificates. The club is affiliated to the British Judo Association and is fully insured.

In addition, club members Kirsty Watkin and Vernice Mulley are Area level BJA referees. Richard Curtis and Vernice Mulley are fully qualified competition timekeepers.
A large number of players have had success at national and international level, and we currently have around 400 active judo players.

Westcroft Judo Club was established in 1995 when members of the Ede family started training sessions in a squash club. The judo club is now one of the largest in South England, and is the official British Judo
